Keep Dreaming

dreming

I remember a time
When I associated drive
With the shark’s need to keep moving
If it wants to stay alive
And that was what made me strive
I honestly believed
That somehow
This bollocks
Was the formula to thrive
Pick a direction
Go with the flow
Wear all the trappings
Status on show
Swallow your pride
And forget all you know
Be a good mushroom
Stay in the dark
And we MIGHT
Let you grow
But try burning brightly
You’ll be blinded by the glare
Extinguishing the industrious spark
To be replaced
With that thousand yard stare
As it dawns
That there’s been too many dawns
And here you are
Still a spare
No chance of this cat ever getting the cream
Not after a life
Of reaching for the prize
But only ever catching steam
The dream may work out for some
But for others
It’s only ever a dream
Time
The hunted beast
Was mine to kill
To toy with and use
To gorge on ’til I’d had my fill
But time is a stalking horse
And it never really did stand still

No Such Thing As Fate

no-fate-1

Going backwards
Together
At a rate of knots
Regressing
Quicker
Than I can gather my thoughts
With leadership
No more clued up
Than drawing lots
Greed driven arrogance
Calling the shots
Burning
With an appetite
Impossible to sate
The embers
Of neighbourhoods
Dying in the grate
Divided
Conquered
And told who to hate
Reality confirms
There’s no such thing as fate

The politics of anger

buddha

You were angry when you couldn’t get your way
Fuming when antagonists had their say
Livid when the promises went astray
And even though you won? You’re somehow angrier today

Accomplice to the start of truth’s demise
Convinced that this would lead to bluer skies
Deaf to people’s fears and victim’s cries
And still you won’t accept, the whole campaign was built on lies

Consequence dismissed as “project fear”
With those consequences creeping ever near
Immune to the truth about those beacons you revere
Who are selling out your rights to the things you hold most dear

I get that politics can be intense
And that all you get is splinters if you sit upon the fence
But comes a time you must accept the sense
And stop divisive headlines from dictating your offence

I never would insult you, or call you for a fool
But I will tell you now that I think that it’s uncool
To fall for a doctrine so obviously cruel
And by spreading that division, be complicit as it’s tool

I don’t need to judge you, or tell you who to be
I’m happy in the knowledge that my own will is still free
I’m fine with you seeing things differently to me
Because although we’re different branches, we still branch from the same tree

Your “Mail” is showing

lies

Who still buys a paper?
Who thinks we’re going in the right misdirection?
And then tries to justify it with “I don’t really read it”
“I only get it for the telly and sport section?”
Yet you still attune to their stance
Without ever seeing the connection
Or feeling yourself led by the nose
To every kneejerk, over-reaction
Dragged in by headlines
A daily dose of bias confirmation
Programming a once open mind
Setting what was once YOUR inclination
Subverting core values
To control your imagination
Setting the patterns
For your every consternation
A breakfast of opinion
Selective in reflection
Breeding diseased thoughts
A self-administered infection

As Dead As Pretty Little Flowers in a Vase

You look so smooth
Polished and preserved
Like a work of art

Trying to live a lie
Without ever being in control
Of your own fickle heart

Cracks papered over
Trying to maintain a certain image
While inside you’re falling apart

Living life like a thoroughbred
When you were never any more
Than twenty minutes off the cart

Reaching too far and too fast
Without roots anchored
To take any strain

Believing you’re the strongest link
When you were never even
A part of the chain

The saddest part?
Given the chance?
You would do it all the same again

And still you can’t see
That this whole created psyche
Is simply just insane

But there you go again
Hitting the town, the clubs
The brightly lit bars

Half remembered memories
Of being chauffeured to parties
In other people’s cars

A flashing, strobe-lit blur
Of camera flashes, spotlights
And dancing under the stars

When will you ever realise
You’re already as dead
As the pretty flowers in a vase

The Light of Leah Little Legs

11013620_10205110218147237_5378549410617269160_n

Her laughter sparkles with a golden shimmer
Even the dog smiles
A sound that visits with a draining delight
Brings a warming light
Like a fireball chasing the gloom
A dervish whirling
Through every corner of the room
Finding memories scribbled on a wall
Of an earlier time
When sunshine came round to call
And a reminder of times yet to play
Nature’s cure for the creeping years
And eternally creeping grey
Lines on the corner of eyes
Pointing like an arrow at that spark
Highlighting the light inside
Instead of the years they had begun to mark
A living, breathing elixir
A spiritual lift
A Granddaughter
Life’s greatest ever gift

Dream for Hope

hopesanddreams

We have to stop
We have to stop pretending it will be OK
We have to stop answering when the greedy pray
We have to stop… And this is what we have to say

“We will no longer cry”
“We will no longer let our young be the ones sent to die”
“We will no longer be usurped and held down by your lie”
“We will no longer be told what to use and when to buy”

For far too long
For far too long, too little had to suffice
For far too long we’ve been experimented on like mice
For far too long we have lived, to your throw of the dice

The time has come
The time has come for us to claim our own
The time has come for us to respond to what we’re shown
The time has come for truth to out, and myth to be blown

We have a choice
We have a choice to be the best we can
We have a choice to be more than just an “also ran”
We have a choice to live for the better of our fellow Man

Maybe it’s just me
Maybe it’s just me that sees the things I do
Maybe it’s just me that needs to learn to see this through
Maybe it’s just me, and none of this resonates with you

I dream for hope
I dream for hope to be the guiding message in my tale
I dream for hope in this age when we’re all set up to fail
I dream for hope to rise above the fear, and finally prevail
